The present volume gathers, under the main theme of languages and cultures of Africa present and past, a collection of original contributions, offered in honor of France Cloarec- Heiss, linguist, Africanist, and past director of the LLACAN (Langage, Langues et Cultures d'Afrique Noire). 27 articles are grouped into four sections: About Banda; Tools and Methods; Language, Culture and History; Descriptive Linguistics. Beyond their thematic variety, these works demonstrate a common interest for the language, mode of exchange, identity and ways of expression of the studied cultures. As such, they witness a tradition of Africanistic research that regards field work as the indispensable foundation of its analyses.
